    Dear Rivals,

you have entered the inner sanctum of the card game guild The Rivals for Catan (https://forum.catanuniverse.com/topic/2977/about-us) - our tournament thread! :D

Organising regular tournaments, leagues and other competitions has been one of the guild's major purposes ever since its foundation.

Measuring your skills with other gamers on a competitive level shall be a thrilling pastime, training possibility, winning chance (prizes are to be awarded), intellectual challenge and - above all other things - great fun!

For all these things we want to create an adequate framework. We hope that we will be able to appeal to many different player types thanks to our wide variety of offerings, including various tournament modes, league systems etc.

In the future, all relevant information for the competitions held by our guild (dates, modes, rules, confirmed participants, prizes etc.) will be published in this thread. This opening post will be updated regularly so that you can always read everything worth knowing concerning the past as well as the future.

There will be open as well as closed (only accessible for guild members) tournaments. If you are interested in participating in a specific tournament you may post in this tread. As an alternative it is also possible to write me a personal message in the forum or ingame.

Enrollments are binding, since they are the concrete basis of our planning and organisation. Players who do not play in a tournament in spite of having enrolled are unfortunately excluded from future events.

The guild The Rivals for Catan wishes all players a lot fun during our tournaments and of course the right amount of luck. :)

  • Considering the rapid growth of our guild within the last few days, we are planning to hold the first official tournament very soon.

Since there is no matchmaking available yet, a little bit of improvising will be required - but there will be a solution.

Planning will get concrete once we have reached 30 members.

  • Hi everybody,

only a few weeks have passed since our guild has been founded - and I am very happy to announce our first official guild tournament! :-)

The tournament will take place on Saturday, the 1st of July at 6 pm CET here at Catan Universe.

Participation is open to everybody (also non-guild-members).

Besides being mentioned in our chronicle of tournament winners (see opening post), the winner will be honoured with a small prize.

Lacking alternatives here at Catan Universe, the played variant will be the introductory game of The Rivals for Catan ("The First Catanians").

The tournament will be played over five rounds in the mode "Swiss system" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss-system_tournament). In case of the same number of points at the first place after five rounds, there will be a deciding match.

We are expecting an average game length of approx. 30 minutes per round. Between each round, increased efforts will be required - in terms of organisation as well as time - due to the non-availability of match-making for the time being (for more details, see below).

Therefore the tourney will take about 3-3.5 hours - so all participants must plan time from 6.00 pm until approx. 9.30 pm CET.

Enrollments are binding and can be made in this thread or via personal message ingame or in the forum.

Everbody can stumble upon unexpected circumstances that force him/her to cancel his/her participation. In such cases we kindly ask you to communicate your cancellation as early as possible. Once again, please use one of the communication paths mentioned above. Players who do not appear at the arranged starting time without a comment cannot participate in any future tournament of our guild.

Special characteristics due to missing match-making:

The non-availability of match-making for "The Rivals for Catan" at Catan Universe makes it quite a challenge to organise such a tourney - but we will not get discouraged by that! :D :muscle:

The irreplaceable mainstay of coordination during the tournament will be our guild chat.

At the beginning of each round, the current draws will be proclaimed via guild chat. In order to make sure that the software always matches the right opponents, the two players scheduled to play each other in a given round will have to start searching for a new game at the same time.

As soon as player A and player B (the contestants of match 1) have confirmed via guild chat that they were matched correctly, the contestants of match 2 (player C and player D) simultaneaously start searching for a game and so forth.

At the end of each round all results must be confirmed by the involved two players. Afterwards, the game master determines the draws for the next round with a software, proclaims them via guild chat and the procedure starts again.

Unfortunately, this approach is not totally uncomplicated (yet the only alternative as long as there is no match-making) and requires a very cooperative and coordinated behaviour from all participants.

:exclamation: Attention: Loss of karma and/or ELO-points possible :exclamation:

As we know from experience, in the vast majority of cases the software matches two players who want to play each other by starting to search for a new game at the same time. The organisation of our tournament is depending on that mechanism.

However, in spite of all efforts and hopes, it can (and most likely will) sometimes happen that two players who are scheduled to play each other in a given round end up facing the "wrong opponent". As a matter of course, many other people who do not participate in our tourney, are going to be playing "Rivals" on Saturday evening as well.

In such a scenario, each participant of the tournament must be willing to immediately leave the game he has been "mistakenly" assigned to by the software and start another attempt to get into the "right" game with his scheduled opponent.

If this becomes necessary, the player who is forced to leave a game must unfortunately accept a loss of karma as well as ELO-points - our time schedule makes it of course impossible to first finish the "accidentally" created game against an opponent who does not play in the tournament.

We know that a comfortable running of a tournament looks slightly different - but we, the guild "The Rivals for Catan", are anxious to offer all Catan-enthusiasts the possibility to play in a tournament as soon as possible - in spite of some present technical difficulties.

If everybody enters the tourney in a good mood and with the right amount of patience and tolerance it will certainly nonetheless become a pleasant experience for all participants.

    Information for non-guild-members:

We would like to celebrate the joyful occasion of our first official guild tournament with all players at Catan Universe and therefore grant access to non-guild-members as well.

As explained above, our guild chat will be the central medium of communication during the tournament. For this reason, each participant must have access to the guild chat as long as the tournament is running.

Non-guild-members who are willing to participate must therefore join our guild for the duration of the tourney in order to be able to follow the procedure proclaimed via guild chat.

Right after the tournament you may of course immediately leave the guild again - without having to fear criminal prosecution... :P

We are looking forward to (hopefully) many participants, thrilling as well as fair matches and a joyful tournament for all players! :muscle: :)

Many greetings from your card game guild The Rivals for Catan!
